Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Josh.

Hi Hari, your swollen lymph node is not caused by HIV.

Hi, the risk of transmission is minimal to zero. There has never a reported case of transmission via oral sex. This is because saliva contains antiviral properties that would prevent transmission via this route.

Kissing is not a route of transmission for HIV.

As this was your only exposure, PEP did not need to be prescribed. You are considered too low risk and there would be more risk of the side effects from PEP than actually going on to test positive.

It is good that your doctor is managing the sore throat and dry mouth. Often the symptoms you have mentioned can occur in situations like this because of stress anxiety. This can also account for some of the weight loss by 12lbs is a lot. Are you eating/drinking at the moment?

From what you have described there is no reason to worry. You can test and confirm your status using a 4th gen test 6 weeks from exposure.

Diabetic male with Possible exposure – performed oral sex on gay male on one night stand. Said status was negative but it had been a few months since last test. His previous 2 – one negative & on prep – the other not sure said clean but no contact.

Possible seamen and kissing (said he had a nick after but- don’t know if any blood)

The next morning – I woke up with very dry mouth. Went to get tested for STD & HIV. Doc gave me Pep. Negative for all at that initial test.

Mouth continued to be very dry – started getting sore throat & sore nodes at day 3. Still dry mouth and starting to get possible thrush.

Day 4 – doc said possible thrush – gave meds to suck on.

Day 6 – called doc that wasn’t doing well mentally – few side effects of PEp not making me feel well. In last 7 days lost 12 pounds. (I am a fit strong athlete) – she was concerned about those side effects and took me off Pep on day 7.

Day 9 – mouth feeling less dry but patches on tongue. Itchy in outside of neck & mental health not good.

Other guy – still has not tested but feels fine. Little sore throat at day 5 but seems fine.

Question- what are my chances this is HIV. Since doc took me off pep when can I get tested again?

This is crippling anxiety for me. Support from others but so scared.

Hi Tenzo, the earliest you can have a conclusive test is 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP. This is using a 4th generation test. Before this and the result will not be accurate. As you had started PEP within 72 hours after the exposure and continued with PEP for 28 days it makes your risk of HIV very low.

Hi, i had possible exposure with a hooker but not sure about her status and the condom broke, the duration of sex was 15 mins. Within 48 hrs i went to get PEP medication and i took PEP for 28 days. Before starting PEP i tested negative, and at 30 days also after 4 weeks. Am i safe from HIV infection after this possible exposure? Do i need to test again?
