Q and A

Question

Can I have a baby with my HIV positive partner?

My partner is positive and on medication. I want a baby. Is it safe to have unprotected sex with her?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Yes it is safe. Do you know your partners viral load? If it is below 200 there is no risk of transmission even without a condom. Being on treatment will help keep both you and your partner, and also your baby safe and healthy.

Unable to transmit HIV while on treatment is called U=U.

Hi Bob, for U=U to be applied a person will need to be on treatment AND have a viral load below 200. U=U only applies to sex it does not apply to other methods of transmission.

What main factors affect U=U as a prevention method because i read somewhere that not everyone on treatment (effective) can’t transmit Hiv
