Q and A

Question

Why is my partner not positive?

Hi, I just found out that I am pregnant and I tested positive for HIV. My partner tested too but his results came back negative twice and we haven’t being using protection and it has been almost 4 years…

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Have you started treatment?

Have you tested for HIV before? As your partner has tested negative it suggests you have been living with HIV since before your current partner. Do you know your viral load and CD4 count results?

Having sex with someone HIV positive does not guarantee transmission. There are a number of factors that change the risk of transmission and they are explained here.

I had sex 5 times with a girl of unknown HIV status
Let’s assume she is positive, what’s my chance of contacting the virus because I have read that 1 exposure is a low risk so what about 5 exposure with the same person??
    Thanks
