Q and A

Question

Am I protected if I had an exposure on my last day of PEP?

Hi, I just took my last dose of PEP this morning by 1am. Just for easier understanding, I’m a man. I just had vaginal sex and the condom broke (by 8:36pm), and I kept going for 3 – 5 mins until we were done. They told me that they don’t have anything (I don’t really believe it).

What are my chances of contacting HIV? Is the PEP still working in my system?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

As this person told you they were HIV negative, why do you think otherwise?

Even though the condom broke, as you had been using it for the time prior, the risk of transmission, if any, is reduced. This is a low risk exposure and does not require PEP.

As you had been on PEP, the last dose would have helped reduce risk, but to use as full protection a further 2 days of PEP would be required. In this case the PEP would act as on-demand PrEP.

However, as stated, this is a low risk encounter and PEP is not required.

Hello? I am ongoing PEP. Taken daily dose for 20days now. I have 8 more days to go. I got a second exposure (but this second source is confirmed negative – we took a hiv test and he’s negative) do I need to extend Pep? Or I should complete my dose and end it there?
