Q and A

Question

Am I protected if I had an exposure on my last day of PEP?

Hi, I just took my last dose of PEP this morning by 1am. Just for easier understanding, I’m a man. I just had vaginal sex and the condom broke (by 8:36pm), and I kept going for 3 – 5 mins until we were done. They told me that they don’t have anything (I don’t really believe it).

What are my chances of contacting HIV? Is the PEP still working in my system?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

As this person told you they were HIV negative, why do you think otherwise?

Even though the condom broke, as you had been using it for the time prior, the risk of transmission, if any, is reduced. This is a low risk exposure and does not require PEP.

As you had been on PEP, the last dose would have helped reduce risk, but to use as full protection a further 2 days of PEP would be required. In this case the PEP would act as on-demand PrEP.

However, as stated, this is a low risk encounter and PEP is not required.

Hi Jesus, no you do not need to begin a second course of PEP.

As you had been on daily treatment for the month prior, it is okay to restart within the next few days and switch to PrEP.

As long as you continue to take PrEP for the 2 days after exposure it will remain effective.

Hi Johnson, yes PEP will still work.

When on PEP you are protected from further exposures for the duration of the course. PEP will work like PrEP.

Hi Anthony, you only need to extend the course by 1 day.

As long as you are able to take 2 doses of PEP (e.g., until day 29) after the last exposure, PEP will work like PrEP. You do not need to take another full course.

Hi Elizabeth, yes you will still be protected. PEP contains similar medication to PrEP. This means PEP will work to prevent you from further exposures while you are taking PEP. You do not need to extend the course of PEP.

You can finish your course of PEP on the original date planned.
