Q and A

Question

Am I protected if I had an exposure on my last day of PEP?

Hi, I just took my last dose of PEP this morning by 1am. Just for easier understanding, I’m a man. I just had vaginal sex and the condom broke (by 8:36pm), and I kept going for 3 – 5 mins until we were done. They told me that they don’t have anything (I don’t really believe it).

What are my chances of contacting HIV? Is the pep still working in my system?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

As this person told you they were HIV negative, why do you think otherwise?

Even though the condom broke, as you had been using it for the time prior, the risk of transmission, if any, is reduced. This is a low risk exposure and not require PEP.

As you had been on PEP, the last dose would have helped reduce risk, but to use as full protection a following 2 days of PEP would be required. In this case the PEP would act as on-demand PrEP.

However, as stated, this is a low risk encounter and PEP is not required.

Josh.

Hi Alex. having one delay in your course of treatment is unlikely to have any impact in how effect treatment is. You have described a low risk exposure (topping and had been using a condom).

You do not need to restart PEP and can continue your course as normal.

Will I still be protected if I have a 16-hour delay in PEP dose 10 days into PEP? I was topping with a partner with no clear HIV status and the condom broke. I immediately replaced the condom but for safety I started PEP about 4 hours after the event. After taking PEP regularly for 10 days (+- 1 hour in terms of the medicine time everyday) I missed one dose and only took it 16 hours after my regular time. Should I restart the PEP?

Hi Blessing, are you able to continue your course of PEP for 2 more days after this exposure?

This will allow PEP to work as on-demand PrEP and you will not be required to complete a full second course of PEP.

Hi Gregg, while on PEP the medication will work like PrEP. You are prevented from further exposures.

Hi Milton, your tests are conclusive. You do not have HIV. Your symptoms are not caused by HIV. Please see here for more information: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

    Ey there…

I’d like to ask, so I took trenvir as pep after exposure… So I was given trenvir to take as PEP, so I took the pills for 35 days and two pills a day. I Tested immediately after 35days and the results were negative then tested 6 weeks again the results were still negative I tested using 4th generation test… Then tested after 6 weeks making it 90days and the results are still negative then used a prick finger test which was also negative after 105days.

Been suffering from a sore throat and a dry cough and muscle aches…i’ve told myself that I’m positive but the results say other…

Could it be that I am because I do have symptoms or could it be that I’m not?

Im battling to go out with my life.

hi Stewart, you can continue taking PEP as instructed. You do not need to restart the course of PEP. As you had been taking PEP, your treatment will also prevent risk of other exposures for the duration of the course. Please see here for more information: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq
