Q and A

Question

Has starting treatment caused problems with sleep?

I started taking rilpivirne + Truvada two weeks ago and I have had sleep disorder I didn’t have before.

I wake up in the middle of the night and I can’t get back to sleep. Will this side effect go away eventually or will I have to ask my doctor to switch the medication ?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

I am sorry to hear about your problems sleeping.

What time of the day do you take this treatment? and are you using it as PEP or to treat HIV?

Problems with sleep are not side effects commonly associated with this combination of medication.

Have you noticed anything else recently that has changed in your life that could cause problems sleeping e.g., stress, feeling unwell, change of sleep habit/diet?

If these medications are not working for you, it would be suitable to switch. However as these are not common it is best to find out if there is another cause first.

After how long of being on treatment did you notice this? Most side effects of treatment will go away after a few weeks when your body has time to adjust.
