Q and A

Question

Can I pass on HIV to my partner?

I have HIV and since 2018 I am taking my drugs. My partner does not use condom with me, can he be infected?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Do you know your viral load? As you have been on treatment since 2018 it is likely that you have a viral load below 200/undetectable?

If this is the case there is no risk of transmission to your partner. This is called U=U. It means that when on treatment and your viral load is suppressed, it is impossible to pass on HIV via sex. Even without using a condom there is no risk of transmission.

If you have a higher viral load, being on treatment will still greatly reduce the risk of transmission and there are other factors that impact this which are explained here.

Josh.
