Q and A

Question

Is my partner at risk if I missed my treatment?

I have been undetectable for 3 years now. Even had my viral load at December 2022 and it was less than 20.
Something happened, I missed my dosage for a week but as soon as i got home, I continued my medication for about two weeks and I had unprotected sex with my partner the second week after restarting the medication…
Is my partner at risk?? Am troubled

Its been 10 months now and my partner is always feeling tired and lost some weight… I need answers please

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Have you had a viral load test since? and has your partner had any testing for HIV in the last 10 months?

As you had been undetectable prior to missing your treatment for a week, it makes the risk of transmission incredibly small. It takes a week or more for viral load to become detectable again after doing so well on treatment.

Being at the cusp of this week means your treatment was very likely to be able to maintain your viral load being undetectable. After 2 weeks of being on treatment again you would have remained undetectable from this point.

In this case it would be almost impossible for your parter to have HIV from this event. It is still importnat that she be tested and go to the doctor. Being tired and losing weight are very non-specific symptoms and can be caused by any number of things. Their doctor should investigate this as appropriate.

Hi Kelvin, it is great that your viral load is still suppressed. This suggests that your partner had not been at risk when you missed your treatment.

The pain in your girlfriends wrist and shoulders are not HIV related in regards to this potential exposure that you have described.
