Question
Why did my viral load rebound and why does the doctor question me?
13 October 2024. Related: Adherence, All topics, CD4 and viral load, Changing treatment.
Hi I’m taking my ARVs on daily basis, but when they took my blood the results came back and they said my viral load is not good.
I asked what’s the cause and they told me I’m not taking my medication.
I have been though and I’m a strong person I even play netball and do aerobic exercise.
So I ask them if I’m not taking my medication I will be that fit?
Answer
Hi there
Thanks. I am sorry that this has been difficult. The doctor’s response is related to how they have been trained. So treatment guidelines tell doctors that they first need to check adherence when viral load rebounds. So even if we have been taking all our meds on time, doctors don’t always believe us.
This is a shame because it isn’t helpful because it affects issues of trust.
However, not everyone is always as good at taking meds as you are, so checking adherence does help some people.
Being physically fit though isn’t directly linked to taking your meds on time.
Depending on how high the number is, this might just be a lab error. Other reasons could be from not taking meds with food if this is important or from a new drug interaction if you started another medicine or supplement etc.

Did they give you a number with your results? This would help me understand different options you have now.
