Question

Can I get married if I am HIV positive?

Hi. Can I marry if I am HIV positive? I am only 28 male, and just diagnosed. How long I can live if I start HAART in future? Do you also think there will be more treatement options in future? Thank you

Answer

Yes, most countries have no legal obstacles against marriage, though many countries do have laws that saw you need to tell your partner about your HIV status. There are some countries where discrimination limits human rights, so it also depends where you live.

Many HIV positive men get married – to partners who are either HIV positive or HIV negative. If their partner is HIV-negative it is still possible to have children

Hi Mr R, HIV should not have any impact on who you marry. Many countries will have no restriction on marriage, though some will have laws that you tell your partner. It is completely possible to have HIV negative children. Having an HIV negative baby will rely on mum taking HIV medication and after birth, your baby will be on a course of HIV medication. With this it is very likely your child would be HIV negative.

Hi AD, I am not sure of the context of your comment, but there should not be any restrictions against HIV positive people getting married.

    Hi Temitope,

i-base can’t comment on your relationship, we can however tell you that if you wish to have kids, then you can.

Once your partners viral load is undetectable you’ll no longer be at risk of being infected, please see here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

What this means is that you can try for a family.

    Hi Emmanuel,

Is your HIV diagnoses new? If it is, it’s common to feel scared and to ask questions about living with HIV.

There’s no reason why your status should be an issue, positive people marry all the time. Positive people also have kids and with people who are negative.

Hi Swathi, I am sorry that i-Base don’t run a connection service. Why not start by contacting a local or national HIV support linked to your HIV clinic or close to where you live?
