Q and A

Question

What are the risks of taking an over-dose of ARVs?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Taking one or two extra doses of ARVs it not likely to be a problem. But is could increase side-effects from the drugs for a couple of days.

To give you a more accurate answer please let me know how much of an overdose you are talking about. For example, is it just forgetting someone had already taken the drugs and taking them again once? Or are you talking about someone say taking a whole months supply at once?

Taking a double dose by accident on rare occasions shouldn’t cause serious harm, however, a deliberate overdose of a lot of ARVs could increase the toxicities to such an extent that it damages the body’s vital organs.

    Dear Nopinky,

I’m so sorry this has happened. And it is urgent. Please call the clinic or doctor immediately. This should be your friends HIV doctor or HIV clinic, or any other HIV clinic number you have. They will know that your friend needs medical attention urgently.

One worry is that Tribuss gets to work much more quickly in some people than in others. So 15 tablets can have a much bigger effect when that happens. That’s why your friend should contact the HIV doctor urgently.

I hope your friend is okay. Please let me know.

    Best wishes,
    Roy

Everyone will forget or be late sometimes, and it will be fine. But if it happens a lot you can ask your doctor for support in taking it every day.

As it says above on this question, a double dose of D100, or Atripla, by accident shouldn’t do serious harm.

You can find out more about adherence and taking your meds in the right way here.

I’m on D100 but can’t remember if I took the med this afternoon or not, and I don’t want to skip. What are the side effects for an overdose?

Sorry, it must be a real challenge to work these shifts and take Tribuss in the right way. It’s really not a good idea take it at 9 in the evening and again at 9 in the morning because on those days you’re doubling the dose. This could be a reason why you’re not feeling so well. Other ARVs don’t have to be taken before bedtime like Tribuss. It’s important to ask your doctor if you can change treatment to one of these.

I am on ARV’s (Tribuss) taken at night time. Unfortunately I had to work night duty that was not planned. I am working broken shifts i.e. 2 nights on, 2 nights off, three nights on and two nights off. My challenge is that I cannot take my tablets at the usual time especially while on duty because I am afraid of the side effects (dizzyness). What I do is that I take my tablets again in the morning at 9h00 after having taken the previous night dose that was at 21h00. I am currently not feeling so well please help.

Hi, Most people get worried when they find out they’re HIV positive. But today HIV treatment is safe and effective. And going on treatment will help stop you from getting sick. Talk to your clinic or doctor about your feelings and worries. Ask them if they can offer support.
