Q and A

Question

Can I take Tribuss with food?

Hi! I am 35 years and started taking my tribuss pill in February 2012. My problem is that I cant take the pill on an empty stomach. Can this make the pill to disfunction?

Answer

Hi,

Thank-you for your question.

Tribuss is a generic combination treatment which contains three HIV drugs. These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. In the UK, this combination in a single pill is called Atripla.

Tribuss is usually recommended to be taken on an empty stomach is to reduce side effects. This is up to 60% more efavirenz is absorbed if it is taken with a high fat meal.

This would mean there is more efavirenz than you need and you may be more likely to get side effects. Side effects from efavirenz include dizziness, mood changes and sleep disturbance. Please follow this link for more information about efavirenz side effects.

However, the increased levels of efavirenz are connected to a high fat meal.

If you prefer to take Tribuss with some food this is fine, just not with fatty foods.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

    Hi Mary

Guidelines recommend continuing with Tribuss – this is good for both you and your baby.

I just found out that I’m pregnant and I’ve been using Tribuss since 2012. Should I continue using Tribuss, is not too strong for the baby?

    Thank you

    Hi Jem

Great that you are on treatment. How is everything going?

In general it is common to put on some weight during the first six months or so, especially if you had previously lost weight due to HIV.

This can vary between different people though. It really depends on how much weight you previously lost and your current weight now.

For some people this can be noticeable within the first few weeks.

    Hi Martha

Please talk to your doctor or to someone at your clinic about how you feel.

HIV meds like Tribuss are good for both your health and your baby’s health.

The clinic need to check whether these are side effects and to know about your vomiting.

    Hi,

It is great that you are on treatment. Usually a viral load takes about 3 months to become undetectable. This means there is enough time to do so before you give birth. You can find more information about HIV and pregnancy here:
