Q and A

Question

Is there a difference between Atripla, Odimune, Rizene and Tribuss etc

Hi

I started with Atripla, then received Odimune and now I have been given Tribuss from my provider.

I have never had side effects. How safe is it for me to take Tribuss?

I’m afraid it might change how I look. Is it the same as the two I have already been taking?

Answer

Hi

Tribuss and Odimune are generic versions of the fixed dose combination pill Atripla. These drugs have different names because they are made by different manufacturers.

Each version contains the same doses of three drugs. These are tenofovir, FTC and efavirenz.

There are no safety concerns from switching from one version to another.

Although some HIV meds have been linked to body shape changes, this is not commonly reported for any of these drugs. One exception, generally rare, is that efavirenz has been linked to weight gain in breast tissue – also called gynaecomastia (GYE-na-co-MAS-tee-ah).

    Hi Shadrack

You are right that Odimune and Tribuss contain the same active drugs.

You need to talk to you doctor about changes in your weight. This doesn’t mean that the meds are not working though.

It might be a symptom of something else or it may be due to changes in your life, but you doctor needs to look at all the factors.

    Hi Nompumelelo,
It is very important to discuss this with your doctor and your pharmacy. Odimune and Atroiza are three-in-one pills that contain efavirenz, tenofovir and FTC. These pills should not be taken together with nevirapine. You should be taking either Odimune/Atroiza or nevirapine with Truvada (which contains tenofovir and FTC).

You should not be switching between nevirapine and efavirenz from one prescription to the next. This could increase your risk of side effects and developing resistance.

It is very important to discuss this with your clinic as soon as possible to clear this up. For support or information in South Africa you can contact the Treatment Action Campaign.

I have been on Apripla since 2010 and this month the distributor posted me Odimune and I was a bit worried to start something new as atripla has been wonderful in the sense that the only side effect i get are when I go to bed 3 hours or more after taking the pill i get a bit light headed and when that happens i know it’s my cue to go to bed either than that i have nothing. i was a bit skeptical to start using this Odimune however after reading the previous comments i’m at ease….

    Thank you

Usually side effects improve after the first few weeks on treatment. It’s worth discussing this with your doctor and showing him/her any rash. Usually this can be treated or the symptoms controlled but it’s important to check it isn’t anything serious. Have a look at our side effects guide for more info on rashes.

I started taking Odimune three weeks ago, I was dizzy now its getting better, my skin sometimes becomes itching have rednes rash on that area. my feet started itching in the sense that I will need to remove what ever I wear on the feet. I am worried if I could discuss this with my Dr to change my combination.
