Q and A

Question

How long does dizziness with Tribuss last?

Hi I started Tribuss three days ago.

I just want to long know how long does dizzness takes because I’m I work night shift sometimes.

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla.

Tribuss contains three ARVs- efavirenz, tenofovir and FTC. The dizziness you are experiencing is a common side effect of efavirenz.

Usually this will improve after the first few weeks of treatment. Efavirenz may be a difficult drug if you work shifts that require sometimes working days and sometimes working nights. This is becasue most people routinely take efavirenz before they sleep.

If this dizziness is affecting your ability to work, or making it dangerous to do so, it’s important to talk to your clinic about this. There are alternative drugs that may be more appropriate with your shift patterns.

There is more information about efavirenz side effects here.

    Hi Njungani,

I’m sorry, you sound very unwell. But it’s important to discuss this with your doctor.

What treatments have you been taking? Please let us know the names of these. And if you have access to your viral load and CD4 results, please tell us this too.

What country do you live in? There could be support organisations that can offer local help.

    Hi Limpho,

Are you taking Tribuss? Feeling dizzy is a reported side effect of Tribuss. You can talk to the doctor and ask about switching to ARVs that are easier for you to take.

However, it’s important your heart and chest symptoms are checked by the doctor. You can ask what’s causing them.

Do you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results? Please let us know.

    Hi Dineo,

If you’re feeling dizzy after a year and a half of being on meds then you may need to change. This is something to discuss with your doctor. A combination without efavirenz may help.

    Hi Power,

Have you been taking Tribuss? If so, please tell your doctor about your symptoms. A side effect of Tribuss can make some people feel anxious and depressed. There should be other ARVs you can take.

If you live in South Africa you can contact the Treatment Action Campaign. They can help with local support.
