Question

Should I go back to ARVs if I stopped taking them years ago?

Hi I was drinking my arv from 2014 and for years I was getting sick more and I stopped taking meds from 2017 till now. I feel back to myself and I have 3 children HIV negative. My Q is should I go back and taking arv and getting sick again.

Answer

Hi there

I can’t talk about you history off treatment, but it sounds like you have just been very lucky. Your children were also very lucky not to have become HIV positive during pregnancy.

It also sounds like you would have been using earlier HIV meds that very definitely more difficult to take. Newer HIV meds are now available which are much easier to take and these might work very well for you.

Anyone who is not taking HIV meds really needs to still be monitored. This is becasue without realising it you could now be more nulnerable to different infection that could be very serious.

Please go back to the clinic though so they can check your CD4 can and general health.

best wishes
