Q and A

Question

Can I take ARVs if I’m not positive?

Can I use Odimune if I’m not HIV positive?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

For me to be able to answer this, I’ll need to know why you’re considering taking Odimune.

    Hi Nanas,

Is your partner using ARVs? If they are and their viral load is undetectable, there’s no risk to you. If their viral load is detectable, then you may still be in time to start PEP. Please see here for more info on PEP: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/pep-and-pepse

    Hi Sly,

If you think you’ve been exposed to HIV it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about PEP. You can discuss your HIV risk with them too.

Please see this link for details about PEP. The sooner PEP is started the more likely it is to work.

Hi, the condom bust while having intercourse and went to hospital but tested negative but do not know the status of my partner,is it not risky to take if I’m negative?

    Hi Lischen,

Unfortunately it’s not a good idea to take any HIV medicine that’s not been given to you by the doctor.

Please can you talk to the doctor about this. You can ask about using PrEP. PrEP is used by people who are at risk of HIV and are HIV negative.

Please see this guide to PrEP.

Hi i am HIV negative but my partner is posive(almost undetected ) we both not so well informed about this virus as he got infected 11 months ago.unfortunaty we had unprotected sex last week due to carelessness.so i took three of his medication pills(ARVs)and took one each day for 3 days.now can i experience any side effects from that? Coz now i have a yeast infection(i think since the symptoms are similar)n been treating it for a week knw but nothing.and he did not come inside me .non of his liquids went inside me?im confused as to whether im sick because of it or its just a coincidence and i just have a normal yeast infection.i knw im suppose to go to the doctor probably than ask here but times are bad financially.plz help me with clarity if possible.thank you

    Hi Zoya,

When you say nearly undetectable, what do you mean?
ARVs should only be taken by the person who they’ve been prescribed for. If there’d been a risk, you needed to use PEP, not take his ARVs. As to why you’re feeling the way that you are, I can’t comment on this. ARVs don’t however give women yeast infections.

    Hi Virgo,

It looks like the clinic have given you PEP.

PEP involves using a combination of three HIV drugs after sex if there has been a significant risk – and taking them for a month. The word PEPSE is sometimes used – it stands for PEP after Sexual Exposure.

Please see this link for more info: http://i-base.info/guides/testing/pep-and-pepse
