Question

Can I switch from TEE to TLD?

Can I switch from TEE to TLD while my viral load is above 250?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Yes it is safe to switch from TEE to TLD. Many countries are starting to adopt TLD as first line as it ie better tolerated than TEE with fewer side effects. Switching will not risk increase of your viral load.

TEE is often taken at night to avoid the side effects of efavirenz which is contained in the combination. TLD is often suggested to be taken in the morning. It contains dolutegravir which can cause problems sleeping.

Josh.

Hello Mameya and thanks for getting in touch.

Africa is using generic medication that come under different brand names.

However, the active substances are always the same.

Chances are that the clinic is not giving you different medication.

Possibly they are giving you the same medications under different brand names.

That means you are taking the same ARVs and that this is a safe practice.

    Please don’t worry.

Please see here for a list of brand names (although it is not exhaustive):

Hi Nondumiso, yes TLD is safe to take during pregnancy. Continuing with HIV treatment through your pregnancy is the best way to keep both you and baby healthy. TLD will not cause any problems with baby.
