Question

What are the side effects of Reydin – do any ARVs not have side effects?

Hi there, what are the side effects of Reydin and are there any ARVs that don’t have side effects?

My doctor gave me Reydin and I was drinking it at night at first. My gums started bleeding and after that I had trouble concentrating. I also forget very easily. It is like I’m loosing my mind, what could be the problem?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Reydin is a generic version of TLD. This link is to a previous question about all TLD side effects.

Most ARVs have some side effects but only for some people. Many people don’t get side effects. Sometimes you might need to try different meds if you have difficulty with one.

Reydin does not cause bleeding gums. Have you mentioned this symptom to a doctor?

How are you sleeping at night? Reydin is often best tolerated when taken during the morning. It can cause problems sleeping. If this is the case it would explain why you are having trouble concentrating.

If you have any further questions do get in touch,

Josh.

Hello Lebogang and thanks for getting in touch.

    Congratulations for starting treatment.

To be on all those medication your CD4 count was rather low (under 200 copies) and your doctor prescribed what was needed to protect you Fromm other infections.

I understand this regimen might be difficult, but so will be the treatment if you pick up any opportunistic infections.

The weight loss is more of a symptom of your low immune system (low CD4 count) than the medication you take for it.

On the bright side, you will only need to be on nova trim and isoniazid while your CD4 count is under 200 cells/ml, so not too long.

My estimation is that within 6 months – 1 year you will be back to your active, full life which can be very long if you only stick with the HIV treatment.

Hi Mathato, there isn’t one easy answer to this question. Sometimes HIV transmission can happen after just having sex once. In many other cases it can happen at any time when condoms are not used – but only if the person is not on treatment. If the person who is living with HIV is taking treatment and has an undetectable viral load, then the meds also protect their partner too.

Is your partner taking HIV meds?

Hi Makie, thanks. I am sorry to hear about this problem which is actually reported by many people. Also, although this might be related to being on meds, treatment guidelines don’t recommend changing meds becasue studies didn’t show this helped.

Instead they recommend advice on diet and excercise, which it sounds like you are already doing. The dietary advice doesn’t involve just reducing what you eat though as cutting right back can make your body hold on the fat. Instead, it is better to change to still but to cahnge of healthier ore balanced food. This link might help:

Recnt US guidelines also talk about using new weight loss drugs called GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide and tirzepatide, if these are available, but access can be difficult.

I have gained a lot of weight ever since I have started taking reydin, the weight is so uncontrollable, I’m exercising 3 to 4 times a week and I’m not eating much. But I still can’t loose weight. What should I do?

Hello Nozazi and thanks for getting in touch.

All medication can have side effects, however this is not given.

Every person responds differently and that’s why it is also important to be in care and have often tests and monitoring.

The often tests can help your clinic make adjustments to your medication to ensure you remain healthy.

Hello Vanitha and thanks for getting in touch.

Sleep problems are a common side effect with dolutegravir, one of the components of Reydin.

Taking it in the morning instead might work better for your husband
