I just discovered I have HIV. Will my fiancé be infected? Should we go ahead with our marriage plan?
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
No. You do not need to cancel your marriage plans. Have you spoken with your fiancé about being HIV positive?
Have you started treatment? ART means that your viral load will be suppressed. When this number falls below 200, there is no risk to passing on HIV to your partner. This is called U=U.
While waiting for treatment to suppress your viral load, using a condom can prevent transmission. So can your partner using PrEP. This is a medication they can use to prevent transmission.
HIV should not be a barrier to your marriage. Many HIV positive people get married and lead very normal lives with their partners.
