Q and A

Question

Are yellow stools okay on PEP?

Hi I’m 23 years old.
I had unprotected sex with a girl who had 4 partners but I don’t know her HIV status.

It’s my 6th day on pep TLD (Viropil). Yesterday night when I was sleeping I got a sharp pain on the right side around liver and kidney I can’t say accurately where. I’ve got yellow stools for 2 days. And I’m very tired and weak right now. My bones and muscles are weak. I didn’t test for kidney and liver as I was running late and directly took PEP on 60th hour. Are yellow stools okay? And is this pain okay? Kindly help as I’m in stressed. Thank you

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Have you been able to speak with a doctor about your symptoms?

There are many causes of yellow stools and this should be assessed by your doctor. They will also be able to determine the cause of this pain. Have you experienced anything like this before?

Viropil is a generic version of TLD. TLD can cause stomach discomfort. Less commonly it would cause the other symptoms you have mentioned e.g., weak muscles. How long have you been feeling tired? Are you sleeping alright?

What time of the day are you taking PEP?

Josh.

Hi Cash, using the same needle as someone else is risk for HIV transmission. This is called a needle-stick injury. where did this happen? If you were in a hospital you should speak with occupational health, or if this is not an option go to the emergency department. The risk of transmission is lower if there is a longer time between the needle being used between people.

    Hello Josh,
I just took my last dose pep (at 1:30am), I just had an encounter (by 8:40pm) where the condom broke and we kept going for 3-5mins. I’m not sure on the person’s status, just that they told me they were completely clean (I don’t believe it, especially because they didn’t have proof).
Do I go back on pep again? or is the pep still
    Working in my system?

Hi Sam, yes you can take multivitamins. What do you mean by saying your bones are weak? Some multivitamins contain minerals that interact with ARVs. The easiest way to avoid any interaction is to take your ART and multivitamins at opposite ends of the day. As you take TLD in the evening, take your multivitamins in the morning when you wake up.

Hi Sam, it is good that you have spoken with your doctor. Often side effects can be worse in the first few days after starting treatment and soon wear off after.

Viropil is effective. By generic I mean it is made by a different company but it will still contain the same medication. Any generic treatment will work just as well as the other.

After PEP the quickest you can confirm your result is using a 4th generation antigen and antibody test. This test is conclusive from 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP. For more information about testing please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

Hello josh, thankyou for your response. Yup I’ve spoken with the dr but he is always in the rush. He told me that it’s normal and to take dolo 500mg.
I’m sleeping normally and just have these side effects. Hoping it’s normal and I’ll be okay after 28 days.
Is generic (viropil) medicine as effective as the normal one?
And which test should i go for after this course?
    Dr has prescribed me these:
    1. HIV RNA PCR BLOOD
    2. TORCH 5 antibodies IgG
