My viral load doesn’t suppress anymore and I’ve been on treatment for years now and I’m taking my meds everyday and on time. I live in south Africa.
Answer
Hi there
Thank you for your email – and I am sorry that your viral load is now detectable.
Please could you say how high it was on the last test?
Also, what are your current HIV meds called?
Your options will depend on how high your viral load is now. Also on the history of HIV meds that you use now and in the past.
What has your doctor said about this and have they discussed changing treatment?
Please email or comment with more information so I can provide more detailed info.
This online guide includes more information about why viral load can rebound and when is the best time to change treatment.

South Africa uses WHO and South African guidelines based on having a viral load above 1000 copies/mL.
f your viral load is higher than 1000 your doctor should talk about changing treatment.
If it is still lower than 1000, your doctor should look at reasons why it is not undetectable.
