Q and A

Question

My husband just tested HIV positive but I tested HIV negative?

We just found out my husband has HIV today I tested negative and I don’t understand why. Can you please explain.

Also what is lipodystropy?

Answer

I am sorry to hear about your husbands test results, but you are lucky in still being HIV negative.

We have had many questions from people in your situation and it is not uncommon. Although you are HIV-negative now, it doesn’t mean you are protected against HIV in the future, so it is important to use condoms now with your husband.

So far you have just been lucky – not every exposure results in infection – but you are still at risk catching HIV.

For more information about your husbands health and treatment see this guide.

Lipodystrophy is the term for a range of side effect to some HIV drugs, that changes the way your body processes fats and sugars. More information is at this link.

I am sorry but i-Base no longer answers individual questions about risks of HIV transmission or HIV testing.

This service is based on information relating to treatment for people who are HIV positive.

    Hi Kareen,

HIV is passed to babies through their mothers. So if you are HIV negative your baby will also be negative.

    Hi Fl-bio,

The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. HIV tests are most accurate from 12 weeks after exposure (the last time you had unprotected sex). If your partner is on medication this lowers the chances of passing HIV to you. For more information about couples where one person is positive and the other negative please see these previous questions:FAQ:Sero different couples

I had a child from a HIV positive female n the baby came out fine. My test came back negative 2 months after she became pregnant. We separated when she became pregnant, so I’m wondering did she cheat while pregnant or she been had it n didn’t tell me. She say her viral load is low or something so I’m good. We got back together after the baby was born n had unprotected sex like 4 times n this when she broke the news to me. I’m just scared of being positive cause I have 6 kids to raise. I smoke a lot n my throat be feeling stole at times(lymph nodes) but other than that I have my strength n feel fine. No diarrea or nothing. But I need to get my status cause she’s taking meds n I might need to take them too if I’m positive w/o knowing.

    Dear Happy
I am sorry about your recent diagnosis. I can appreciate that it is confusing for you finding out that both your boyfriends are not HIV positive. A situation like yours is not uncommon. There are couples where one remains HIV negative despite having had unprotected sex with positive partner. This is due to a number of reasons including the fact that not every exposure results in a transmission, as well as luck. Please follow this link to our guide to HIV testing and risks of sexual transmission, which explains this in more detail.

Your second question was regarding how you could be positive when you have only had unprotected sex with two partners who are not positive. You did not specify how old you are as there is a possibility is that you could have been infected at birth. However, it is unusual to survive into adulthood without having any symptoms.
