Q and A

Question

Can I take Tribuss with food?

Hi! I am 35 years and started taking my tribuss pill in February 2012. My problem is that I cant take the pill on an empty stomach. Can this make the pill to disfunction?

Answer

Hi,

Thank-you for your question.

Tribuss is a generic combination treatment which contains three HIV drugs. These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. In the UK, this combination in a single pill is called Atripla.

Tribuss is usually recommended to be taken on an empty stomach is to reduce side effects. This is up to 60% more efavirenz is absorbed if it is taken with a high fat meal.

This would mean there is more efavirenz than you need and you may be more likely to get side effects. Side effects from efavirenz include dizziness, mood changes and sleep disturbance. Please follow this link for more information about efavirenz side effects.

However, the increased levels of efavirenz are connected to a high fat meal.

If you prefer to take Tribuss with some food this is fine, just not with fatty foods.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Please speak to your doctor. They need to see any new symptoms and also advise you how to use this treatment. Aldara is not recommended to use on the inside. It is important to follow your doctors advice on how to you this treatment. Please talk to your doctor about other options.

The link to treatment includes alternative approaches.

    Hi,
I have a problem with warts on my private part. My doctor prescibed Aldara, which I should apply sparcely only on the warts for six weeks. I use a magnifying mirror to do this and noticed some on the inside as well. Its it advisable to apply Aldara on the inside? And isn’t there a better method to get rid of them quicker?

    Hi

Unless you have a deficiency and your doctor recommends this, I do not think vitamins make much difference one way or the other. They are unlikely to do you much good and unlikely to do you much harm (except to your wallet).

HIV meds sometimes cause changes in the way fat is stored in different parts of your body. This is something to talk to your doctor about.

However, and this is not a side effect, most people put on weight in the first year they are on treatment. This is usually because because the virus no longer is taking you energy from food, so you put weight on unless you also change your diet.

If the weight is related to this – if it is “love handles” rather than fat inside your stomach pushing out, then diet and exercise are likely to be better than changing treatment.

    Hi

I started taking Tribuss and vitamin supplements last year, im doing very well my CD4 is now 584 and viral load is undectatable.

The problem I am having is that I’m gaining weight especially in my stomach. What can be the cause of this? I’m thinking of stopping supplements because someone told that they will make me fat.

Purbac will not increase your CD4 count. It is usually prescribed so that these antibiotics protect you from a rrange of infections until your CD4 count becomes higher.

HIV meds reduce your viral load so that your CD4 count can increase.

    Hi Simon,

My CD4 count was last very low when I tested. Wil purbac help increase my CD4.

Purbac is a combination pill that contains two antibiotics. It is very commonly taken by HIV positive people.

Tribuss is a combination pill that contains three antiretroviral to treat HIV.

There are no interaction between the meds in Purbac and any HIV meds.

  8. So

Hello, can I take Purbac while using Tribuss?

    Hi Bongi,
It is recommended to wait 2 hours between a high fat meal and taking Tribuss- it sounds like you’re doing the right thing!
