Q and A

Question

Can I take Tribuss with food?

Hi! I am 35 years and started taking my tribuss pill in February 2012. My problem is that I cant take the pill on an empty stomach. Can this make the pill to disfunction?

Answer

Hi,

Thank-you for your question.

Tribuss is a generic combination treatment which contains three HIV drugs. These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. In the UK, this combination in a single pill is called Atripla.

Tribuss is usually recommended to be taken on an empty stomach is to reduce side effects. This is up to 60% more efavirenz is absorbed if it is taken with a high fat meal.

This would mean there is more efavirenz than you need and you may be more likely to get side effects. Side effects from efavirenz include dizziness, mood changes and sleep disturbance. Please follow this link for more information about efavirenz side effects.

However, the increased levels of efavirenz are connected to a high fat meal.

If you prefer to take Tribuss with some food this is fine, just not with fatty foods.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

    Hi Richard,
It can be difficult to decide which treatment will be best for you. It is important to know that if you do have problems with the first treatment you try you should be able to change this. Do you have any specific questions?

    Hi

Tribuss is a three-in-one pill that includes efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. As you are still taking efavirenz and FTC is very like lamivudine, the main change has been to switch from zidovudine (AZT) to tenofovir.

This may help some of the fat return to your legs but even if this does happen it is likely to be a slow process. Even if the fat is returning it is likely to take a year or two for the fat to return. See this report on the MITOX study.

The fat accumulation (bigger stomach) may be related to treatment (perhaps efavirenz) or maybe lifestyle. Either way, unfortunatlet diet and exercise are the only thing that has so far been able to reverse this. These are difficult to do though and can take time – so setting goals for lifestyle changes and taking things slowly are usually a good approach.

    Hi Zinle,
it’s fine to drink alcohol while on Tribuss, so long as you don’t drink so much that you forget to take your treatment.

Hi,I’ve been taking efavirenz, lamivudine and zidovudine for about four years but the doctor changed them in January because they changed my body. I have a big stomach and very thin legs. I am now taking Tribuss and I’m more comfortable. Are there any chances of getting back my body back to how it was and if yes how long will it take? Thanx

    Hi Mujaji,
When you say you experience an increase in blood pressure is this something you are measuring or are you describing a way that you are feeling?

I started taking tribuss a week ago. I have been experiencing an increase in my bood pressure every night. Is an increase in the blood pressure one of the side-effects of this drug? Also, I usually exercise by jogging once a while. But with a higher blood pressure, can I continue jogging?
