Q and A

Question

Can I take Tribuss with food?

Hi! I am 35 years and started taking my tribuss pill in February 2012. My problem is that I cant take the pill on an empty stomach. Can this make the pill to disfunction?

Answer

Hi,

Thank-you for your question.

Tribuss is a generic combination treatment which contains three HIV drugs. These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. In the UK, this combination in a single pill is called Atripla.

Tribuss is usually recommended to be taken on an empty stomach is to reduce side effects. This is up to 60% more efavirenz is absorbed if it is taken with a high fat meal.

This would mean there is more efavirenz than you need and you may be more likely to get side effects. Side effects from efavirenz include dizziness, mood changes and sleep disturbance. Please follow this link for more information about efavirenz side effects.

However, the increased levels of efavirenz are connected to a high fat meal.

If you prefer to take Tribuss with some food this is fine, just not with fatty foods.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

    Hi Pearl,
I’m glad to hear that you are doing well with Tribuss. It’s normal to have an increased appetite after starting ARVs. This isn’t a problem but if you are worried about this have a look at this page about healthy eating.

Hi, Im on tribuss treatment from January 2012, Im doing very well, actually Im okay. The only thing is Im hearing sounds around my head or right ear , I dont know how to explain this but there’s sounds im hearing alone. I do work fine do everything just normal, but sounds are there, of course when Im studying this sounds disturbs me. It started last month, I reported to my doctor, he seems not to understand me, he adviced that I take Centrum tablets, they are finished, sounds are still there. And of course I’ll continue with my medication, Tribuss is working.

Please advice what to take or try.

    Thanks

    Hi Lebo,

Have a look at this previous question. The person who asked that question was taking the same drugs as you (but not in a one-pill format). Is this the type of noise you are experiencing?

If you are worried about the reason your husband is taking these pills it is important to talk to him about this, and explain your concerns.

    Hi,
It’s normal to have some side effects when you start treatment and this might include feeling warm. If you do have a very high fever though it is important to contact a doctor about this. How are you feeling now?

    Hi Khensane,

All HIV medications can have some side effects, although these vary from one person to the next. In the UK Tribuss is called Atripla. You can read about this combination here. Purbac is an antibiotic and can have similar side effects to ARVs including nausea, diarrhoea and a rash. If you do experience any symptoms you are worried about you should contact your nurse or doctor for advice.
