Q and A

Question

Is there a difference between Atripla, Odimune, Rizene and Tribuss etc

Hi

I started with Atripla, then received Odimune and now I have been given Tribuss from my provider.

I have never had side effects. How safe is it for me to take Tribuss?

I’m afraid it might change how I look. Is it the same as the two I have already been taking?

Answer

Hi

Tribuss and Odimune are generic versions of the fixed dose combination pill Atripla. These drugs have different names because they are made by different manufacturers.

Each version contains the same doses of three drugs. These are tenofovir, FTC and efavirenz.

There are no safety concerns from switching from one version to another.

Although some HIV meds have been linked to body shape changes, this is not commonly reported for any of these drugs. One exception, generally rare, is that efavirenz has been linked to weight gain in breast tissue – also called gynaecomastia (GYE-na-co-MAS-tee-ah).

    Hi Dora,

If the medication is making you feel like this, you’re going to need to talk to your doctor. Let them know how it’s affecting you and ask them if you can change to another combination. Though ARVs are meant to help a person control their HIV, they aren’t supposed to negatively impact your life.

    Hi Edmund,

Rizene is a generic make of Atripla. The main drug in this pill is efavirenz. And this can cause sleep disturbance. Is this the reason why you’re feeling very tired?

However, you can talk to your doctor about all these symptoms and ask if there are other HIV meds that will be easier for you to take.

It’s a good idea to dicuss all your meds with your doctor. And that includes the antibiotic Purbac and the vitamin supplements too. You can ask if these might be affecting your stomach.

Hi. I am on Rizene, Purbac and also DS.24 tablets. I have been taking this medication for more six months now. The challenge is that after taking them, I feel very tired, my stomach becomes full of air and I keep farting from time to time. My brain feels as if there is huge void inside of it. Its a terrible feeling in short. What could be causing this?

    Hi Lilly,

Do you mean Trivenz, Tribuss or Trenvir? If so they are generic versions of Atripla. Please see this link to other names for this pill.

They have different names because they are made by different companies. They contain the same doses of the same 3 drugs.

There are no safety concerns from switching from one version to another.

    Hi Tshepo,

That’s a great decision. Odimune and Atroiza contain the same HIV meds. They have different names because they are made by different companies. You can see all the different names for this pill here.

    Hi Lorraine,

Atroiza and Odimune contain the same meds. They have different names because they are made by diffrent companies. But they work in exactly the same way against HIV.

Volutrip contains different meds, but please check this with your doctor. It should contain tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir. These meds are safe and effective to take and work very well against HIV.

Do you live in Africa? Please see this link for more info about modern HIV treatment for Africa.
