Q and A

Question

What is Atroiza used for?

Answer

Atroiza is a combination pill than contains three HIV drugs. It is a generic version of Atripla.

It is mainly used to treat HIV.

However, i some countries the same drugs (efavirenz/tenofovirDF/emtricitabine) are used as PEP to prevent HIV infection.

This is not recommended in the UK or in other guidelines. which recommend different HIV drugs for PEP. This is because of concerns about efavirenz side effects in HIV negative people.

See: PEP, PEPSE and PrEP.

    Hi Tino,

If you both know that you’re negative you don’t need to take ARVs. Your wife should ask why she’s been given them.

    Hi Leena,

Its very common to feel anxious when pregnant, and that’s even when you aren’t positive. Though this is common, you’re already doing the best thing possible for your baby. You’re on ARVs and your viral load is undetectable. This is excellent.

Unless you have other health issues, you don’t need to take any other medication. The ARVs will reduce the risk of transmission to your baby. Reading the following guide may also help:

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Hi im 6 weeks pregnant, me and my partner are Hiv positive and my viral load is undetectable we started with the treatment in January 2017 and we are both concerned about the health of our unborn child. Please help, is there any other drug that i need to take to prevent mother-to-child transmission?

Hi Lesego, congratulations on your new baby – and it is great news that both you and your baby are HIV negative. If your partner has an undetectable viral load on treatment, this will also protect you from becoming positive, even if you don’t always use a condom. this link has more information:

Hi, i’ve been in a relationship for about 2 yrs not knowing my partner is positive. Now i have a 5 mths baby with him and I recently found the pills in his drawer. After becoming pregnant and before and after labour, i tested negative. does this means i might be some how HIV positive?

    Hi Syah,

You should be on meds because you’re positive. Your partner may need to take them as a precautionary measure. Now that you know you should use condoms when having sex. This is until your viral load becomes undetectable. For more info about being newly diagnosed and starting meds, please see here:
