Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Josh.

Hi Jack, 6 weeks after PEP with a 4th generation test is conclusive. You do not have HIV. Please follow this link for more information: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

    Hi, jack here,

I have tested negative with 4th generation ag/ab duo test kit with finger prick on the 2 weeks after pep, 5 weeks after pep and 6 weeks after with the same 4th generation test kit with finger prick test. Can it be the conclusive test that i am negative? Am suffering anxiety and worry for a long period.

Thanks first for all the information and the helps, appreciate it

Hi Ryter, testing is conclusive from 42 days after. As you are at day 41 your result is most likely conclusive. Testing again the day after is unlikely to give a different result, but testing with a 4th generation test is only considered accurate from day 42.

I finished my PEP 8 days ago. After finishing pep my skin is so itchy. Still now my skin itches a lot. I’ve tested negative after 1 month of initial exposure. Is the itchy skin is the after side effects of PEP or something else? And how much trustable is the test after finishing PEP? What’s the percentage? I’ll wait for your reply… Thanks in advance

Hi FlameThrower, how long after PEP did this itchiness start? Did it start immediately after finishing or was it a few days? Itchy skin can be a side effect of PEP but this it would be uncommon for the side effect to occur after stopping.

Testing so soon after PEP is not reliable. You need to wait a minimum of 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP. You will need to use a 4th generation test for your result to be conclusive. Before this and the effects of PEP can give false results.

Hi, tenemine can still work as PEP. The difference between PEP and PrEP is that PrEP uses 2 drugs and PEP uses 3. The drugs used between them are largely the same. It is suitable to use a 2-drug combination for PEP. The only reason it usually uses 3 is for competition but the evidence for this is low.

If your test was 49 days after your last dose of PEP your result is conclusive. If it is not you will need to wait. As you have tested negative, regardless of timing, it is already suggestive that you are HIV negative. Hi Batu, your test is conclusive. You do not have HIV. You do not need any further testing.

They were 4th gen tests. I’ve had a sore throat and swollen tonsils for 3 months now. That’s why I want to test again.
