Q and A

Question

What will happen to me if my boyfriend is taking Acriptega and I don’t?

What will happen to me if my boyfriend is taking Acriptega and I don’t?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Are you HIV positive or negative?

If you are positive, why are you not wanting to take ARVs? If you are not taking treatment and have sex with your boyfriend, there is no risk of resistance for your boyfriend to this medication. Though your own HIV will not be treated.

If you are HIV negative and your boyfriend is taking Acriptega, this means that risk of transmission can be reduced and ultimately prevented. When viral load is suppressed by medication to below 200, HIV cannot be transmitted by sex. This is explained by U=U.

Hi Lee, nausea headaches can be a short term side effect when changing meds, but these are not normally bad.

Have you tried taking the meds with some food to settle your stomach? This might also help with headaches.

Over-the-counter medicines for headaches like aspirin or paracetamol are okay to take for the first few days in case these help.

If these side effects continue, or if they are already really difficult, please contact your doctor and clinic for their advice.

Hi Ben, as long as she is on treatment and undetectable there is no need to use a condom to prevent HIV. She cannot pass on HIV. Though if you have sex without a condom you are still at risk for other STIs. U=U only applies to HIV.

Yes, I took time and had a wide conversation about her condition and she accepted that her status is undetectable and she is under medication.
My quiz is should I continue having raw sex with her? cause am worried about my status too and confused man’

Hi Ben, have you spoken to your girlfriend about this? Taking treatment means her viral load is likely suppressed. This means she would be unable to pass on HIV even without a condom. It would also be safe to have a baby. This is called U=U. It stands for undetectable equals untransmissable. More information about this can be found here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/
