Q and A

Question

Can I take Tribuss with food?

Hi! I am 35 years and started taking my tribuss pill in February 2012. My problem is that I cant take the pill on an empty stomach. Can this make the pill to disfunction?

Answer

Hi,

Thank-you for your question.

Tribuss is a generic combination treatment which contains three HIV drugs. These are efavirenz, FTC and tenofovir. In the UK, this combination in a single pill is called Atripla.

Tribuss is usually recommended to be taken on an empty stomach is to reduce side effects. This is up to 60% more efavirenz is absorbed if it is taken with a high fat meal.

This would mean there is more efavirenz than you need and you may be more likely to get side effects. Side effects from efavirenz include dizziness, mood changes and sleep disturbance. Please follow this link for more information about efavirenz side effects.

However, the increased levels of efavirenz are connected to a high fat meal.

If you prefer to take Tribuss with some food this is fine, just not with fatty foods.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi Nadi, It’s great that you’re taking Tribuss without any side effects. Changing from 9 pm to 8 pm is not a problem. Many people try to take their meds within the same time slot every day. This can be and hour either way of 9 pm if that is your regular time. Yes, it’s OK, you can change it once and then carry on with the new time.

Hi. I take my Tribuss religiously every 9 pm. I have no side effects. I want to change to 8:00 is that OK?

    Hi Lindo,

Its important not to skip meds, if you do you may develop resistance. If you’re having side effects with the Tribuss, and because you work nights your best option is to change combination. Therefore, if its possible you should talk to your doctor about changing treatment.

    Hi Joss,

In the beginning its important to try and take your meds at roughly the same time every day. Once your HIV is under control, then there’s some degree of flexibility, so a few hours either side of your normal time.

Should Tribuss be taken at exactly the same time in the night every day. Example every night at exactly the same time.

Hi Anita, Tribes definitely needs to be taken before you go to bed. This is so you can be asleep if you get side effects like mood changes or dizziness. This med can cause vivid dreams though and sometimes you might fell tired the next day, especially for the first few weeks. This link has more info.
